SBA has had a phenomenal semester! We have accomplished so much in such a short amount of time, and I wanted to take a few minutes to recap some of the things we have accomplished, and thank all those who helped make our success this semester possible.
First, one of the overall goals of SBA this semester has been to continue to grow our sense of community in the law school. We have done this through our lunch with SBA meetings this semester. While all students are always welcome to attend any SBA meeting, we provide lunch and especially encourage students to attend this town hall style meeting.
Our class reps have been instrumental in class bonding activities. The 1L class reps have hosted a coffee and bagel meeting with classmates, worked with the Military Law Student Association on a Toys for Tots drive, had a class mass and social, and hosted a 1L Ugly Christmas Sweater Party after their final Legal Writing Brief was due. It’s hard to believe these class reps were just elected this semester! They dove right in to being involved and helping to build the law school community with their class. The 2L class reps co-hosted a Friendsgiving with the Spiritual Life Committee, as well as had a class mass and social and created mentor-mentee pairings with 1Ls and older students. Finally, the 3L class reps have hosted a class pool party, and are planning a Sky Zone event and class mass and social with the Spiritual Life Committee for next semester.
Our ABA Reps this semester have spent a significant amount of time focusing on health and wellness, and creating opportunities for our students to participate in different fitness classes free of charge to help manage stress. Our ISBA rep has attended several Indiana State Bar Association Student meetings, and is looking to involve the law school as much as possible with our local bar association.
Our Admissions Committee is working with the Admissions Office to plan next semester’s Admitted Students Weekends. Our Alumni Relations committee helped the Alumni Initiative Program through our alumni office with social hours–many of which will be coming up over Christmas break. Further, the committee planned an incredibly successful NDLA board visit luncheon and social, as well as helping with the Alumni Reunion weekend.
Our Athletics Committee planned a successful powderpuff tournament in October. They also are gathering teams together to participate in the UVA Softball Tournament next April. The committee will be incredibly busy in January as our annual bowling league begins!
Our Merchandise Committee has created so much new merchandise this semester and our store has completely taken off! We look forward to finally having our online store next semester through the SBA website on law.nd.edu! Our Communications Chair is helping with this effort in combination with this blog!
Our Social Committee planned many social events this semester, and most importantly had an incredibly Fall Ball Event! We had over 500 people attend the event at Century Center in downtown South Bend. The committee has already started planning our Spring Barristers Ball.
Our Community Service Committee planned events with Dismas House, Habitat for Humanity, and Robinson Learning Center. In addition, the committee hosted a Thanksgiving Basket Drive and is currently hosting a drive to provide Christmas Dinners for many families in South Bend.
Our CDO Committee has been working with our CDO office to have extensive programming this semester. Notably, the committee helped to lead 3L discussions with 2Ls pre-OCI interviews to help the 2Ls prepare for their interviews. Additionally, the committee hosted a “Power Lunch” so that younger students could meet with older students in certain cities and learn about the market in those cities.
Our liaisons have also taken on a full semester. The curriculum committee rep attended regular meetings with the committee, our undergraduate liaisons paired up law students with undergraduate mentees and had a social so the two could get to know one another. Our transfer liaison had a social for our transfer students in September to welcome them to campus. Our London liaisons, both of whom are in London, have planned fun and exciting events for the students there this semester, and look forward to doing even more over there next semester. Finally, our LLM liaison has helped to plan events between LLM students and JD students–including a LLM/JD student mentor/mentee program.
Finally, this year with the creation of an ad hoc Orientation Committee, we look forward to providing input to Student Services to ensure the orientation program for new students meets the needs of all NDLS students.
With finals around the corner, SBA has completed our activities for the semester, and is already looking forward to January when we get to do it all over again! From all of us at NDLS–we wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
